The Videogame Corner: Dark Souls III

Game: Dark Souls III
Developer: From Software
Genre: Action Role-Playing Game
Releases: 2016 (Playstation 4, PC, Xbox One)

With both “Dark Souls” and “Dark Souls II” taken care of, it was only a matter of time until I gave the (currently) last entry of the series a go. Yes, I know that the storyline of “Dark Souls” is finished with the third entry of the series, but that never stopped a videogame developer from producing more games. The third entry of this popular series happens to bring some minor changes to the formula, but the challenging difficulty level and tons of options for the player to build their character with are still two of the main pillars of gameplay. And it reverted some of the changes from “Dark Souls II”, for example in form of completely removing the idea of Adaptability; which I as someone who grinded for around nine hours to get a decent dodge roll in that game can appreciate. Now, this does not mean that “Dark Souls III” is therefore a universally loved game, with one voice loving the first installment but dreading the third being fellow blogger Frostilyte, but that might just be another reason to talk about the game on my blog. So, here are my experiences with “Dark Souls III”.

The Videogame Corner: Dark Souls II

Game: Dark Souls II
Developer: FromSoftware
Genre: Action Role-Playing Game
Releases:
– “Dark Souls II”: 2014 (PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360)
– “Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin”: 2015 (PC, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

A few weeks ago, I featured an action role-playing game named “Dark Souls”. I probably do not need to say that much about it, since it took the videogame world by storm introducing a new era of difficult games during a time when videogames were on a trend of becoming more accessable to a broader spectrum of players and therefore more casual. I liked my time with “Dark Souls” and appreciated the challenge it provided; so I went for more. “Dark Souls II” has some loose connections to the world of the original “Dark Souls”, but features a lot of new lore for the kingdom we as the players are going to visit. “Dark Souls II” is the game of the series that splits the player base in two since some dread its existence and wish it would not have seen the light of day while others hail it as the only real “Dark Souls” and embrace the changes it brought with almost religious fervor. I am not here to start some internet discussions about which “Souls” game is the best, a pointless exercise if I ever saw one, but I will give my opinions about the game on offer; and I sure have a few.

“Cubic Creativity” has shaped into a hobby blog that features quite a lot of videogame content. With that in mind, there are certain games which you are basically obliged to cover if you want to be taken seriously as a gamer. Now, I could not care less about whether people on the internet think that I am good or bad at some videogame, or videogames in general for that matter, but one thing I do have to agree on is that some titles were and still are influencial enough on the medium videogame as a whole that you need to cover them for completenesses’ sake. With that being said, I believe “Dark Souls” is one such title. The series shaped a new sub-genre of roleplaying games known as “Souls-likes” and challenged the trend of games getting easier as a whole back when videogames turned from a niche hobby to a more mainstream recreation that whole families could enjoy. I played the first “Dark Souls” before at my friend Marcel’s house some years back but did not get very far. But in all fairness, it did not help that I had finished “Bloodborne” in that general period of time which made the first “Dark Souls” feel somewhat clunky in comparison. But with plenty of time being passed since I had anything to do with “Souls” games, I feel like I need to take a closer look at the first installment of a gaming giant.
